U.S. Reps. Melissa Hart (R-PA) and Don Manzullo (R-IL) are working to build support for a bill they introduced that would level the playing field between employees of corporations and the self-employed when it comes to purchasing health insurance. Hart, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, and Manzullo, chairman of the Small Business Committee, introduced on March 16 the Equity for Our Nation's Self-Employed Act (H.R. 4961), which would give the same health care tax advantage to those who are self-employed as is currently received by those who work for corporations. At press time, Hart and Manzullo were actively seeking co-sponsors and building coalition support in order to bring about action this fall. Under current law, an employee who receives health insurance through his employer does not pay Social Security or Medicare taxes on that benefit.
It's no secret that rising health care costs are handcuffing small-business owners and their employees in this country, forcing many to forego health coverage just to keep their businesses viable. In 2005, premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance rose to an average of $10,880 annually for family coverage ($907 per month) and $4,024 ($335 per month) for individual coverage. The National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE) wants micro-businesses- those with ten or fewer employees- to know that there are steps they can take to gain control of their health care costs. "The key for those who are self-employed is to learn how to become educated health care consumers," said Kristie Darien, executive director of NASE's legislative office. "That means being able to evaluate their own health care needs, seek out appropriate resources, ask the right questions, learn about and investigate available health insurance options, and generally, take an active role in managing their health care environment." To help micro-business owners become better educated, NASE has launched a new consumer-driven health care initiative, called Your Health, Your Choice, which offers these ten tips for cutting health care costs: 1.
Since World War II, the U.S. health care system has been built on the assumption that most employers will provide their workers with insurance. That solution is under extreme pressure as health costs and premiums have gone up at twice the rate of inflation. Today more and more companies are testing the waters of an approach that exposes their employees to more of the costs of health care. The theory is, if the money comes out of employees' pockets, they will use only what they need and shop for the best value. This theory goes under the label of consumer-driven health care and it is controversial. Many employers and self-employed individuals are investigating consumer-driven health care with individual health benefit accounts due to the convergence of three powerful trends: • Rapidly increasing premiums for traditional health insurance.

Net loss in the second quarter of 2006 was $5.6 million, or $0.69 per weighted average common share, compared to a net loss of $1.4 million, or $0.17 per weighted average common share, in the second quarter of 2005. In the first-half of 2006, Eden continued to incur losses from operations and actual sales and growth rates for the first-half of 2006 were significantly lower than expected.
Around 1995, Father Damian Zuerlein noticed a disturbing trend among his mostly Hispanic parishioners at Our Lady of Guadalupe church in south Omaha, Nebraska. "Expanding the use of information technology in health care will help us lower costs and improve the quality of care we are providing," Carcieri said. "To that end, I have set a goal that the majority of Rhode Islanders should have health information available to them electronically by 2010.
"Fortunately, Rhode Island is already leading the nation in electronic prescribing," continued the governor. "To enable us to build upon the momentum we've gained, I proposed -- and the General Assembly approved as part of the state budget -- a $20 million revenue bond to fund a Health Information Exchange to allow providers with electronic health records to share their information safely and securely.
The UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has today issued guidance for the use of the targeted biological therapies, Enbrel (etanercept) and Raptiva (efalizumab), to treat adult patients with severe plaque psoriasis. However, top experts have expressed their concerns that many patients across Europe could still be denied treatment with this newest class of drugs due to funding issues.
NICE's announcement comes as welcome relief to the thousands of UK patients who have exhausted current available treatment options and failed to sustain a long-term benefit. It is a positive sign for patients throughout Europe, whose healthcare systems are influenced by NICE decisions. Leeroy Blake in England was fortunate enough to be offered treatment with a biological therapy, after years of trying every other available psoriasis treatment: For many years, I tried every suitable treatment but nothing seemed to relieve the painful itching.
There's one date in my mind that I will NEVER forget for as long as I live because it was the turning point in my life when I decided I would no longer settle for being an obese man for the rest of my life. That date was January 1, 2004. Oh, I'm sure I thought about doing something long before that actual day, but my long journey to lose weight and get healthy began on that day. .
